Crucified On A Cross Of Gold

by bobby jennings

Much has changed, while little has changed, since the days of merry ole? England when the bumbling bandit from the novel Tom Jones stepped in front of the oncoming carriage and drew his pistol and yelled, "Stand, Stand and Deliver". But now the ones being robbed are not the rich country barons but the American people.

We were warned in the Federalist Papers by President James Madison that if we failed to keep a lid on our government this would be the result. The booty is not money and jewels, but nothing less than our freedom. And the bumbling bandits are Senator Trent Lott and his gang.

Also, I am reminded of William Jennings Bryan as he spoke to the then populist Democratic delegation. His finger in the air, he called out to the cheering crowd "We shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold". While in a different context, little did he know that he was seeing the future of the American people nearly 100 years later.

Like the shot heard around the world at Lexington and Concord, the first shot of a new American Revolution is about to be fired. This is the struggle of the American people to seize control of their Government from special interest groups and corrupt politicians who don?t even know they are corrupt.

On this Independence Day 1999, on CBS?s "Face The Nation" Senator John McCain, presidential candidate, confirmed that he would do everything possible to bring a vote on campaign reform to the Senate floor. Asked about the upcoming fight, Sen. Trent Lott's accused Sen. McClain in being derelict in his duties by running for President. This only?goes to show how far this once honored body has sunk and the lengths to which prevailing political leaders will go to protect the special interest monies they receive.

It is imperative that the honorable Senators, and the ones that wish to repent and become honorable, step forward now, for surely history will harshly judge the Trent Lotts of the American Senate.

Many modern day colonists are restless. Their poor voter turnout has been attributed mainly to quiet desperation. However, some have shown their displeasure and defiance by dumping their herbal tea into the Minnesota lakes and rivers and electing as their governor an ex-wrestler with only $600,000 of campaign funds to spend.

The modern day colonists, though some may think otherwise, are not being duped. Recently the American people saw through a move by partisan groups to impeach a duly-elected President over laughable charges. Many other charges, which are important and relevant to the well-being of this country, were not even considered or disclosed to the American people until too late. Upon losing, these partisan leaders lashed out that that the people had not the good sense to do what was right. Yet in their ultimate wisdom the People prevailed. Without endorsing Clinton?s actions the public is now showing their disapproval as seen by Clinton's declining job approval ratings.

The battlefield is taking shape with Senators McCain and Feingold raising their sabers and the active colonists their muskets against the Loyalists and Senator Trent Lott. The Loyalists are well financed by, and owe their allegiance to Special Interest groups, PAC funds, and soft money while the colonists draw on the strengths of righteousness and the energy of the American public. Join the support brigade and bring up the ammunition to the front. Give McCain and Feingold the support of American Opinion to make it a fair fight.

As you read this, the Republican Party is building a nearly insurmountable war chest to once again buy the American Presidency. Since their candidate George W. Bush is being billed as a compassionate conservative, one must ask the Governor of Texas why he vetoed a recent bill guaranteeing the citizens of Texas a speedy trial. These rights are already guaranteed in the Federal constitution yet Texas blatantly violates this daily without even a sneer from the the US Supreme Court. "Compassionate Conservative" sounds like Clintonian slick campaign rhetoric to me.

All the while, the Democratic Party frontrunner Al Gore is mired in the misdeeds of the administration to which he claims to not have been an accessory. Gore is being pressed by Bill Bradley a relative unknown outside of the world of professional basketball. Gore stands a chance of being the first standing Vice-President to be denied his party's nomination.

What do they all have in common? Money. The money to produce the slick negative Madison Avenue ad campaigns financed by special interests that have bought American elections and clandestinely controlled our destinies since President McKinley commercially wrapped himself in the American Flag, steamed rolled the populist William Jennings Bryan, and snookered the American electorate.

Step forward nearly 100 years and the process has been refined. A slick ad campaign sold us Clinton and we disregarded the warning signs because we were desperate for change. James Carvell, Clinton?s campaign advisor and attack dog, coined the term, "It?s the economy stupid" to encourage Clinton to dodge the issues and stick to the slick campaign. Just who was he referring to as stupid? Let the call go forth to all corners of this nation, may the telephones jiggle, the postal carriers be burdened, and the email servers be overloaded. Let Freedom RING this Independence Day and on until the next election.

Yes, it?s still a long way to go until November 2000. Much can happen. Perhaps there is another champion of the people still in the wings ready to step forward and lead the colonist charge. But in the meantime we must do what we can do. Given the state of technology and privacy invasions taking place by government and corporate interests and the increase in their technological abilities in the next nine years, this may be in fact the "Last Free American Election".

As I write this I am reminded of the lyrics from the Broadway musical "1776" depicting the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

"Listening to the chirp, chirp, chirp of an eaglet being born." Today, thanks to an environmentally sensitive public, we are listening to outcry of the American People in the form of a soaring mature eagle with the strength to preserve its heritage of freedom.

Call your Senator, pass the word, take back America, and soar with the eagle. I can hear John Adams sing now. Can You?
