Political Wedge Issues and More

Print E-mail

Everybody wants to jump on political wedge issues. Whether it be gays, guns, abortion, tax and spend, immigration and you name it each are deisgned to divide the American public. It seems to me the problems America today faces are quite evident.

Foremost, beating the middle class to a pulp these last 30 years is the gist of the problem. Basic economic principle. Worker productivity rises, wages are stagnant or falling, profits increase. These profits need to find a home and sound productive American business and industry are no longer the most desirable investments. Investment money flows overseas or is funneled into speculation. Oh, sure we can sell our assets at "fire sale" prices. Want to argue whether that is happening?

America needs educated, secure, motivated, and hard working workers for the home grown free market to exploit. Instead we are becoming increasingly insecure, fat, dumb, and unhappy. If you think the free market will reverse this trend, you are sadly mistaken. American business will go to China and the next China and the next.

These are the economic realities that were learned by Henry Ford and the infamous Krupp Industries early in the 20th century.

Think multi-national corporations really care about the health of the American consumer? Think again. They have the whole world coming on line to consume their offerings. Look around it's happening before your very eyes.

People who march lock step with a particular political party's talking points, frankly, are part of the dumb group. You know, this not a football game where we are supposed to yell for the home team right or wrong.

Let's take a few issues that deserve some attention but are in reality just wedge issues.

1. "Enforce the immigration laws and get the illegals out of this country and off American jobs."

Want to throw the economy into a tail-spin. Do this and try to get a roof put on your house, or a head of lettuce or orange picked. Is illegal immigration a problem? Sure, but it requires a slow conservative solution.

2. "Reconfigure the guest worker program for use in emergency situations only."

Implement #1 and it will be an emergency. And believing the federal bureaucracy can implement a program like this quickly is only wishful thinking.

3. "Put a moratorium on all Federal government spending."

Yea, so it can continue to be misapplied? How about cutting federal spending? For instance, slash defense spending and work with the UN, Nato, and Seato like organizations as equal partners. Why do we have to carry the burden? We can gear up if necessary. We have done it before.

4. "Use import tariffs to the advantage of American citizens."

On this I agree. I am not for free trade but advantageous trade.

5. "End the war in Iraq."

Kind of a "no brainer" don't you think. Bring them home world wide. Americans need to look inward, not as isolationists, but as an equal partner with rest of the world. I would add, we need to stop acting like a "dime store" cowboy.

America faces immense structural problems, most of which have been caused by 30 years of renegade republican rule. (Includes 8 years of Clinton) It has transformed us into a me society vs a we society. (Michael Moore). I would call it government for the few rather than the many.

Think McCain will change this? Think again. Will Clinton? Think again. Will Obama? Who knows. Will four years be too long to wait? Probably.

Can Obama win? I have my doubts. When Howard Dean said he would break up the corporate media monopoly, they turned on him with a vengeance. Now that Obama has said he would continue investigations into the Bush Administration, they have turned on him. Will Americans be able to see past what will be the crescendo of dirty politics and election fraud, I just don't know.

I do know this. Change will not occur until Americans get up out of their chairs and start the parade. The elected leaders will follow. We can argue the details when the "Bill of Rights" have been reinstalled.

Just like a tug-a-war you can not win unless most pull in the same direction. That takes the American people throwing out leaders until they lead the parade we the people have started. If we continue to bicker among ourselves and fall for their attention diverting wedge issues, they will continue to lie to and steal from us.
