Goodbye Yellow Brick Road?by bobby jennings
Orginally written 2003 Update Below
In 1776 the American people embarked on a joyous journey down a yellow brick road to seek the wizard of self-government. Why? Because, because, because, because, beeeeeeeeecause?
While we have detoured a few times in our nation's history, one has to now question if we have finally lost our way. President Bush's recent remark regarding dissent on his policies as being against the security of America or being simply un-American -- and that many are applauding this -- is perhaps a sign that we have lost our collective minds. - "Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven."

To understand Bush's headlong effort to attack Iraq one only has to listen to his words. "I hate Saddam Hussein." This is understandable as Hussein tried to assassinate his father in the early 90's. But surely the presidency of the United States of America requires a higher calling than mere vengeance."Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us." Now more than perhaps anytime in our history, we must clearly question the motives of our leaders. THAT is what it means to be an American. "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." In our time of need, May God bless America? Amen. Update March 2007The Bush Administration, like the husband who refuses to stop for directions, has recklessly taken us down a deadend dirt road where our democracy is in danger of perishing. And like the white knuckled terrified wife, we have slapped them upside the head with the election of 2006. We will soon know whether it is too litlle too late. Some will argue that their intentions were good. But some of us have already heard how the road to hell is paved. The intention is a moot point though as we elect our presidents for results, not intentions. As a social liberal I am outraged and saddened by the death of the American soldier and Iraq people which exeeds 100,000 by most estimates. But also consider the hundreds of the thousand physically, mentally, and psychologically injured. And of course the millions who have been uprooted from their homes, normal lives, and financial well-being. As a fiscal conservative, I am stumbling down mad when I consider the true cost of the Iraq war. The price tag for Americans will certainly exceed 2 trillion dollars. And the sum will be paid by our children and grandchildren. God only knows what the cost will be to Iraq. As a pragmitist, I am puzzled. What are we doing? What were we thinking? What were we smoking? Are we crazy? Four long years and we are still trying to find our way back to the yellow brick road. Please God "forgive us our trespasses ...deliver us from evil."
